Home FAQ

FAQ

To be eligible for Pod Drive you need to have a stable Wi-Fi connection. This is so we can ensure your car is always charged at the cheapest times, and to send any remote firmware updates to keep your charger up to date.

As the use of renewable energy in our energy system increases, we can help balance demands on the grid by adjusting energy usage to match the peaks and troughs of wind and solar generation.

All you have to do is plug in your car and we’ll do the rest - ensuring your car is always charged when your energy prices are cheapest.

Whenever you smart charge, you'll be using your Pod Drive inclusive miles allowance.

You can override any smart charging using our Boost feature, which will charge your car straight away.

Any charging sessions completed using the Boost feature aren't smart charged and therefore won’t use your Pod Drive inclusive miles allowance, and are not eligible for cashing out.

Simply set the time of day when you’d like your vehicle charged by, and what % you want your battery to be charged to when you first set up your app. You can always change these settings whenever you need to. Every time you plug in, we'll automatically work-out the cheapest time to charge your car, based on your energy tariff, to make sure it’s ready for when you need it.

We connect to your car automatically and calculate how much energy is needed to ensure you reach the charge target set in your car manufacturers app.

The Pod Point Solo 3S charger is designed to integrate with solar energy, allowing you to charge directly from your home solar setup.

The Solo 3S includes built-in solar integration that lets you charge your EV using just excess solar power or a combination of solar and grid electricity.

You can choose from different solar charging modes through the app:
- Solar Only – uses only surplus solar generation
- Solar + Grid – uses solar first, then tops up from the grid if needed

These options help you maximise renewable energy use and minimise cost and carbon impact.

Any EV charging completed using electricity from solar will not accrue miles from your inclusive miles allowance.

We currently support all single or two rate energy tariffs. If you are on a Smart Tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go, Octopus Intelligent Drive Pack, Octopus Agile, OVO Charge Anytime, Scottish Power EV Optimise, or other similar smart electricity tariff that is not a single rate or two-rate tariff, then unfortunately you can’t subscribe.

As part of your Pod Drive all-inclusive subscription you will be given an annual inclusive miles allowance. This allowance starts from the day your Pod Point is installed.

Each time you successfully complete a smart charge, you will use miles from your allowance. Miles used can be tracked in our app in your Wallet and withdrawn to your bank account once your balance is above £10.

You will still need to pay your energy supplier for your electricity as normal.

Each inclusive mile is currently based on an EV achieving 3.5 miles per kWh and charging with an off-peak rate of 8.05p per kWh - equivalent to 2.3 pence per mile.

You will still be able to charge your vehicle if you've used all of your inclusive miles allowance within a 12 month period. You won't receive any further cash rewards during that time. Your inclusive miles allowance will reset again on the anniversary of your Pod Point being installed.

Yes. There is no limit to the number of cars you can add.

Yes they can. They will need to connect their vehicle to your app, enabling us to smart charge that vehicle.

Your inclusive miles allowance resets after 12 months, from the anniversary of your Pod Point being installed. Any unused miles will expire if they aren't by the end of the 12 month period.

You reserve the right to cancel your agreement with us within 14 days of signing it (the cooling off period). Outside of that, please refer to your agreement terms or give us a call on 0207 247 4114.

We can offer options to ensure you can continue with your Pod Drive subscription seamlessly. Just call our support team when you know you're moving date, and they will discuss your options.

If you're having issues with your charger, give us a call on 0207 247 4114.

9 out of 10 issues can be fixed remotely to get you back up and running. Failing this, if it's a problem with our charger or it's installation, once we have diagnosed the issue, if needed, we'll book one of trusted engineers to come and fix the problem within 48 hours, for as long as your subscribing to Pod Drive.

For more information about what is covered by our warranty, see our warranty statement here.

If we can't get to you within 48 hours of an engineer visit being identified, we'll provide you with credit for our extensive public charging network and direct you to your nearest public charge point.

The £99 is a one-off fee that we charge for an assessment to determine if we can install a Pod Point at your home which can benefit from Pod Drive.

If we find that we cannot install after you have completed our detailed home installation survey, or if you change your mind about taking a Pod Drive subscription before installation (within the 14-day cooling-off period), we refund this one-off fee in full.

The home charger will remain yours. We’ll contact you before your initial Pod Drive agreement comes to an end to discuss extending your subscription at a reduced cost, so you can continue to use your Pod Point and benefit from inclusive miles, stress-free warranty, and lifetime cover.

With a Pod Drive subscription, you're set for 3 years at a locked-in price. No increases, no guesswork, just one price for the whole 36 months of your agreement with us.

No, we currently have no minimum spend to charge on our rapid chargers.

But you must have at least £5 credit on your account to claim and start a charge.

Not to worry, this is our standard pre-authorisation amount (This may vary, up to £30) that is temporarily held (not withdrawn) if you're paying via contactless debit or credit card payment.

Once your charging session has been completed, this amount is taken off hold and you will only be charged for the energy consumed during your charging session.

Whilst Pod Point doesn't impose overstay fees, we advise all drivers to vacate any charging area after they have finished charging to make space available for other drivers. Please always check any location-specific guidelines before you travel to charge - as these may vary.

Instructions on how to rapid charge will differ depending on the charger you are using, they will also differ from our standard network instructions. You can find instructions on how to charge in 3 different ways:

  • Charging instructions can be located towards the middle of this page (see above) underneath each respective rapid charger.
  • In-app charging instructions can be found by selecting your rapid charging location in-app and then tapping on "How to use this charger"
  • Charging instructions are displayed on the front of all of our rapid chargers.

Cost to charge will vary by location, like all of our chargers on the Pod Point Network. For the latest pricing please check the Pod Point App or our Charge Map.

Viewing your rapid charging activity and cost history in the Pod Point App cannot be done when you pay via contactless payment - only when you pay for charging using the Pod Point App.

After you have claimed a charge via the Pod Point App you will receive a notice that tells you how many kWh your vehicle will charge based on the credit left in your account.

We require there to be at least 1 vehicle added. If you want to delete a vehicle and it is the only one, you will need to add a new vehicle first.

When there are multiple cars we do our best to determine which is connected using the data from any that are linked. If we’re unable to determine which car is connected we default to creating a schedule for the vehicle that needs the most energy, this way if we’ve got it wrong you’ll still get charged.

We regularly update our list of makes and models from the EV database. However some types of vehicles aren’t available just yet. If your make/model is not available chose a vehicle with similar battery size from the list. We’ll then still be able to optimise charging for your car.

To connect your vehicle to the Pod Home app, you will need to enter the log in credentials that you use for your vehicle manufacturers app when prompted.

If you are struggling to connect your vehicle, you can try the below steps:

  1. Check that the login details used are correct, by signing into your vehicle manufacturers app
  2. Using the same login details, retry connecting your vehicle in the Pod Home app.

There are a few simple things you can try, to troubleshoot any charging issues you’re experiencing:

  1. Make sure your charge target is set in your car manufacturers app. This will be shown in the form of a percentage (%).
  2. Check that your charger is connected to Wi-Fi. You can view your charger’s connection status by going to the Dashboard screen in the Pod Home app. If your charger is disconnected, you will see an error message. Please select “Fix the problem” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Check that your charger is correctly plugged in to your car.
  4. Try a test charge using our Boost  option. Once your car is plugged in, you will see the Boost button highlighted on your Dashboard . If your car starts to charge using this option, please get in touch.

If you're on an off-peak tariff, we'll only charge your car at off-peak times when your energy is cheapest.

When you plug in your vehicle, we’ll work out if we will meet your target battery percentage in your off-peak energy period. If we can’t meet your target, you will get a notification in our app.

We currently support all single or two rate energy tariffs.

If you are on a Smart Tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go, Octopus Intelligent Drive Pack, Octopus Agile, OVO Charge Anytime, Scottish Power EV Optimise, E.ON Next Drive Smart or other similar smart electricity tariff that is not a single rate or two-rate tariff, then unfortunately you can’t subscribe. This is because the energy supplier providing your tariff will already be controlling how your vehicle charges.

If you're a Pod Drive customer you'll already be smart charging and earning cash rewards, so you're unable to sign up for Smart Charge Rewards.

Yes, you'll use the same login credentials as before.

You don’t need to delete the current Pod Point app when switching to the Pod Home app, but you’ll now manage all your home charging with the Pod Home app.

If you use our public chargers, you’ll still need the Pod Point app for that.

No, the Pod Home app is free to download.

You can download the Pod Home app by following the links on the Smart Charge Rewards webpage or by searching ‘Pod Home’ in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

No, you'll need to download the Pod Home app to sign up to Smart Charge Rewards and start earning.

Once signed up, you'll use the Pod Home app to manage your Pod Point charger.

We’re developing new features in our Pod Home app all the time, to ensure the best experience for our customers.

The majority of features available in our Pod Point app are available in the new Pod Home app, with the exception of the ability to link a charger to your account; this will still need to be done in your Pod Point app.

To be eligible for Smart Charge Rewards you need to have a stable Wi-Fi connection. This is so we can ensure your car is always charged at the cheapest times, and to send any remote firmware updates to keep your charger up to date.

The new Pod Home app includes all the home charging features you know and love — like solar settings, charging activity, and cost tracking — plus an exciting new addition: the Wallet. In your Wallet, you can easily track, manage, and withdraw your cash rewards earned from smart charging. Giving you more money back in your pocket.

The Pod Home app lets you smart charge your EV and earn cash rewards. Smart charging makes charging easier and more convenient—you’ll never need to manage a schedule again. Simply set the time you need your car ready, and we’ll handle the rest, charging your vehicle when energy is cheapest for you.

The maximum number of reward miles that can be earned per customer per year is 4,500 miles - equivalent to £103.50. Actual rewards earned is based on individual charging behaviour.

Any user or vehicle that uses your charger can earn the subscription owner rewards. They will need to connect their vehicle to your app, enabling us to smart charge that vehicle.

Any remaining miles that are not earned before the end of your 12-month anniversary will not be rolled over or available to earn during the following year. The miles available to earn as rewards resets each year, with a fixed maximum rewards amount each year, equivalent to £103.50.

You will still be able to charge your vehicle if you've reached the maximum rewards limit within a 12-month period, but you won't receive any further cash rewards during that time. Your maximum rewards limit will reset again on the anniversary of the date you signed up to Smart Charge Rewards.

By signing up to Smart Charge Rewards, you will be able to earn rewards in the form of miles which can be withdrawn as cash. You'll have a maximum amount of rewards you can earn each year, this begins from the day you sign up, and resets at the year anniversary of the date you signed up.

Each time you successfully complete a smart charge, you will earn miles. Miles used can be tracked in our app in your Wallet and withdrawn to your bank account once your balance is above £10.

You will still need to pay your energy supplier for your electricity as normal.

Each smart charged mile is paid at 2.3p per mile. A Mile is not equivalent to a real world driving mile. Smart Charge Reward miles are earned at a rate of 0.875 miles per kWh charged. Maximum £103.50 reward per customer, per year, based on individual charging behaviour.

Some car manufacturers, such as Mini and older models of the Nissan Leaf, don’t provide an option to change the target battery percentage (%). In these cases, we will always aim to charge your car to 100%. If you’re on an off-peak tariff, we will charge your car as much as possible during those hours.

Yes! Once you have connected your first vehicle, simply go to your Account settings > My EVs to add another vehicle. There is no limit to the number of vehicles you can add.

You can override any smart charging schedule using our 'Boost' feature, which will charge your car straight away.

Any charging sessions completed using the 'Boost' feature aren't smart charged and therefore won’t earn rewards or be eligible for cashing out.

If you have connected to your car

You will see in the Pod Home app that this information is greyed out. You will need to update your target battery percentage (%) in your car manufacturers app. Once updated in your car manufacturers app, it will update the Pod Home app too.

If you haven’t connected to your car

You can update the amount of energy you would like to add to your car each time you plug in (e.g. +20%), directly in the Pod Home app using the Top Up Battery module on the Homescreen.

We’ve simplified the way you schedule your car charging. Simply let us know when you need your car charged by and plug in. We’ll then create a custom schedule to charge your car when energy is cheapest for you.

We can connect to your car and calculate how much energy is needed to ensure you reach the charge target set in your car manufacturers app.

If we can't connect to your car, you can set a fixed amount of charge (a percentage %) to put into your battery.

This provides you with the same "cheaper charging" benefits as your previous scheduled charging but allows us the flexibility to optimise your charging within the off-peak window, maximising the benefit to the grid.

Whenever you smart charge, you'll be earning rewards that can be withdrawn as cash.

The subscription owner will be the first user linked to a Pod Point charger, to sign up for a subscription. The subscription owner can:

  • See the total rewards that can be earned
  • View the transactions associated with the charger linked to smart charge events and any miles earned towards the maximum rewards total.
  • View and manage the bank accounts used to pay out miles into as cash

Smart Charge Rewards is a cost-free subscription, you’ll be subscribing to our smart charging services - for which there is no charge.

Instead you agree to use our Pod Home app to smart charge your EV or EVs via your existing Pod Point home charger and earn rewards in return.

Any user linked to your Pod Point home charger can choose to subscribe, but there can only be one subscription owner.

Nothing. Smart Charge Rewards is a cost-free subscription and there’s no charge for signing up.

Your Smart Charge Rewards contract is a cost-free subscription which you can opt-out from at any time by contacting us. By opting out, you will be removed from the Pod Home app and returned back to the Pod Point app. You will not be able to accrue any further miles. Once you've opted out you won’t be able to withdraw any miles you’ve previously accrued as cash.

No. Rapid charging is generally considered from 43kW AC or 50kW up to 150kW (or even 350kW) DC. These require far heavier duty switch gears and connections.

The Twin Chargers can charge at 22kW if three-phase power is available. However, the vast majority are 7kW meaning they are suited for locations where cars are normally parked for periods of 45 minutes or more.

Twin Chargers can operate on the host's Wi-Fi, or have a GSM modem provided which allows them to use mobile phone networks.

Wi-Fi is generally a more reliable connection, but GSM is often more appropriate for external locations. Twin Chargers also have fail-safes in case of comms failure, that ensures drivers' cars continue to charge.

Business owners of Twin Chargers can set several options regarding visibility, accessibility and payment for the chargepoints using our Site Management Service .

They can be displayed on public mapping, or hidden for private use. Access can be completely free and "plug-and-play", or require the charge event to be confirmed by the driver in the Pod Point App. Business owners also have the ability to set whatever fee they see fit, with payment via the app interface.

No. In order to make the Twin Charger as universal as possible it has two Type 2 sockets that allow all major electric vehicles to connect, via the standard public charging cables that drivers bring with them.

The Twin Charger is compatible with all electric cars that use the Mode 3 charging protocol. This means virtually all mainstream electric cars and vans, from Teslas to Renault vans and all sorts in between.

The only electric vehicles it won't charge are more niche vehicles that use only bespoke connectors or standard electrical outlets.

Yes, we can work with you to design the Velocity+ to fit your brand - both the front and back can have custom wrapping.

Our 50kW Velocity+ chargers need a minimum of 80A TPN supply.

If your site does not have enough power, we can arrange for more power to be brought to site either as an upgrade to existing supply or a new connection. By working with the DNO we can propose the most cost-effective, timely, and efficient solution.

Pod supplies Velocity+ rapid chargers that can charge two cars simultaneously by either CCS or CHAdeMO charging connector.

The VM75+ can charge one vehicle at 75kW, and if two are connected the first car will receive 50kW and the second 25kW,
until the car no longer requests >25kW, and then the power ratings will switch if necessary. The VM50+ can charge a single car
up to 50kW, or two cars at 25kW each.

We offer Rapid and High-powered rapid chargers that deliver 50kW, 75kW, however, each car has its own maximum charge speed - e.g. plug a BMW i3 into a 350kW CCS unit and it will charge at a maximum of 50kW.

Each car charges in a slightly different time, but as a rule of thumb expect a 20-80% charge in approximately 30 minutes when a car's max charge rate is the same as the Velocity+ Charger's maximum.

As more EVs with bigger batteries and faster-charging capabilities become available, access to rapid chargers will be vital to meet the needs of drivers undertaking longer journeys. We therefore believe Velocity+ chargers are best suited to en-route highway charging and shorter stay (20-80 mins) destinations.

As the screen displays illuminated media/adverts it is regulated under the Government’s ‘Advertising Control System’.

Depending on your property type there are a number of conditions for display that can allow installation without the planning authority’s specific consent.

Further detail is available in the UK government's "Outdoor advertisements and signs: a guide for advertisers" document. You can also speak to our specialist team to discuss your requirements and receive guidance.

We recommend installation within the front third of your carpark, to ensure sufficient footfall in the vicinity of the media charger thus generating a good number of media impressions. However chargers positioned immediately at your venue’s entrance have a higher propensity to be blocked by less considerate drivers of internal combustion engine vehicles, meaning there is a greater need for effective signage and enforcement. Pod Point can advise on the best location for your Media Charger.

Our digital publishing platform records the number of times a media asset has been played and which screens it has been played on. Reports can then be created to show media stats against your venue’s footfall numbers to calculate impressions generated.

Our digital publishing platform enables us to customise media campaigns for every client’s needs. A simple campaign could consist of one static poster playing 24/7 across all screens, while a complex campaign could broadcast diverse playlists of video clips on different screens around the country.

The Media Charger is functionally very similar to the Pod Point Twin Charger, i.e. providing Twin charging socket speeds of 3kW and 7kW. For further details on charging characteristics please visit the Twin Charger product page.

Pod Point take data security very seriously.

  • Data is transferred exclusively over https, using TLS 1.2.
  • Our systems are all housed at Amazon Web Services. AWS have comprehensive levels of security, including ISO 27001, PCI-DSS, SOC 1-3, ISO 9001 and DoD SRG.
  • We undergo regular audits of our data security systems.

Your pricing model can be as simple or complex as you wish. For example, you can integrate flexible pricing based on usage (e.g. 35p per kWh used).

Alternatively, you can make the first hour of charging free, then £2/hour for the next 4 hours, then £5/hour thereafter to encourage your drivers to vacate the parking space.

Site Management Service is intuitive and easy to use, so you won't need any specific training. However, our team will be more than happy to help with any questions and we have a demo video on our Site Management Service About page.

No, Site Management Service is a web portal that can be easily accessed via most web browsers on your computer, tablet or phone. It is, however, mandatory for our chargers to have a stable internet/data connection.

After your chargers are installed and have appropriate connectivity, the Pod Point team will send you an email to get started with the Site Management Service. In the meantime you can find out more about it at https://sites.pod-point.com/help

No. Rapid charging is generally considered from 43kW AC or 50kW up to 150kW (or even 350kW) DC. These require far heavier duty switch gears and connections.

Points will be awarded for any domestic installation of a Pod Point tethered or untethered EV charger. Solo Pro and Twin chargers are currently exempt from Pod Pros. Your points will be updated on a weekly basis.

All electric cars that use the Mode 3 charging protocol can use the Solo 3. This means virtually all mainstream electric cars and vans, from Teslas to Renault vans and all sorts in between.

The only electric vehicles it won't charge are more niche vehicles (such as milk floats and forklifts) that use bespoke connectors or standard electrical outlets.

Firstly, all Pod Point commissioning should be completed via the Pod Installer app in order for the Pod Point charger to function correctly for your customer. We can only allocate Pod Pros points to installations completed via the Installer app. You should use the same email address you used for your Pod Installer app account for your Pod Pros account in order for your points to be added seamlessly.

No, the firmware inside our Array Charging boxes has been created so that it doesn't need an outside connection; it is standalone and communicates with the EV chargepoints via a signal cable. However, the chargers will require a connection to enable smart reporting, billing and Over-the-Air updates.

22kW or any three phase units cannot be load managed on our Array Charging system. The system has been designed to make the most out of a limited power supply and is designed around 7kW EV chargepoints.

Yes, the Array Charging load management system can be rated at 40A, 60A, 80A or 100A TPN or 100A SPN if you only have a single phase supply.

This does mean that there are a reduced amount of EV chargepoints which can be load managed but the total number will still be more than if load management was not used.

All cars will receive a charge at all times no matter how many are plugged in on the Array Charging system. This is not a first come, first served system and even at peak times, electricity will be delivered to all cars but at a lower charge rate.

All EV chargepoints will deliver the maximum rate of charge available at all times based on the current load on that phase at any given time.

Typically, all cars will charge at 7kW and our Array Charging system will only reduce charging speed when necessary.

Once vehicles are unplugged or their batteries are full, the rate of charge will then increase for the remaining vehicles, in line with the now spare capacity.

There are multiple options and configurations. Speak to our specialist team for a recommendation on which chargers are best suited to your business.

EV Zones are highlighted on our app through stand-out icons. We are currently working to provide the same experience through third-party apps.

EV Zones create the best driver experience through being:

  1. Easy to find. Stand-out icons on our app will highlight and direct drivers in the area to your location. Once on site, high visibility signage and bay markings mean drivers can quickly navigate to chargepoints.
  2. Easy to use. Once plugged in, customer can simply start the charge through our app with no membership cards or fobs required.
  3. Our load balancing solution helps connecting drivers to get a charge, even at peak times.

There are a few simple things you can try, to troubleshoot any charging issues you’re experiencing

  1. Make sure your charge target is set in your car manufacturers app. This will be shown in the form of a percentage (%).
  2. Check that your charger is connected to Wi-Fi. You can view your charger’s connection status by going to the Home screen of the app. If your charger is disconnected, you will see an error message. Please select “Reconnect” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Check that your charger is correctly plugged in to your car.
  4. Try a test charge using our Charge Now option. Once your car is plugged in, you will see the Charge Now button highlighted on your Home screen. If your car does not start to charge using this option, please get in touch.

The concept of an EV Zone is to always ensure that customers have bays that are available to charge. We therefore recommend a minimum of 6 active bays with relevant signage. But of course, we always encourage hosts to consider options for future expansion.

EV Zones are powered by our Array Charging solution which allows hosts to install 3x more chargepoints on the same electrical power supply without the need to upgrade. Combining this with intelligent design prior to the build stage can mean provision of suitable ducting that minimises future disruption.
