EDF Sizewell B: Case study

How Pod delivered fleet charging infrastructure for EDF during the Sizewell B build, on time and within tight power constraints.

The ask

EDF needed to electrify its vehicle fleet at Sizewell and give employees a reason to make the switch too. The plan: decarbonise the site and offer EV charging facilities to staff working there. Budget and power were both tight, and EDF's own contractors were already on site laying the groundwork, so timing mattered.

EDF hadn't tried this with another provider. Pod already worked across EDF's wider estate, so bringing Pod in kept everything consistent. The approach was straightforward on paper: a fix and commission installation, with EDF's contractors handling the cabling and civil works.

In total Pod delivered:

  • 54 Twin 7kW chargers
  • 6 Solo Pro 7kW chargers
  • 6 3-phase load monitoring arrays

Client background

EDF is one of the UK's largest producers of zero carbon electricity, supplying power to homes and businesses across the country. Sizewell B is a new nuclear power station under construction alongside the existing Sizewell C site in Suffolk.

EDF's car park works and tarmacking were already underway, so building EV charging infrastructure in at the same time made sense, rather than retrofitting later. Pod worked closely with EDF's Commission Lead and Fleet Transport Manager throughout the project.

The challenge

Site complexity slowed things down. EDF's own contractors were carrying out the preinstall work, and delays there fed through to the wider timeline. Power was limited too, so the charging setup had to work within what the site could give it.

EDF's team hadn't worked with smart charging management before, so Pod's engineers stepped in to explain the array system and Site Management Service (SMS) platform, and gave hands-on technical support through the preinstall phase.

Our approach

Pod started with a discovery session to map out EDF's requirements, followed by a preinstall survey to check the groundwork met Pod's standards before committing to a start date.

Array Load Management sat at the centre of the solution, paired with Pod's SMS platform and a number of RFID-enabled chargers for EDF's vans. Pod's sales team led the initial consultation and costing, then handed over to the project management and delivery teams to plan and run the installation, with SMS and onboarding specialists setting up the chargers.

From first conversation to completion, the project ran across 18 to 20 months.

The results

Pod installed 54 Twin 7kW chargers and 6 Solo Pro 7kW freestanding chargers, connected to six three-phase load monitoring arrays. EDF hit its primary objectives, and now manages the whole setup day to day through Pod’s SMS platform.

The array system means EDF can expand the site's charging capacity later without reworking what's already in place, so growth ahead won't mean starting from scratch.

“Pod are part of the EDF group, so choosing Pod for this project was about keeping the work in the family. As part of a new development including a car park, we needed to provide 20% of spaces with charging capability, in line with Suffolk County Council's requirements. Previously the site only had 10 chargers, and demand for EV charging had grown well beyond what that could support, so getting this right mattered. Since the project completed, it's been much easier for people to charge when they arrive on site. For a solution of this size, Pod were organised, supportive, and understood the delivery challenges we faced, working with us where things were delayed. On that front, I'd recommend them to others in our sector.”
